Among the many celebrations and festivals India witnesses, Mahavir Jayanti stands out. With its stark simplicity of rituals, it’s low-key observances, Mahavir Jayanti infuses a sense of serenity in a calendar marked with year-long bustle.

With the message of victory over one’s lesser self, of achieving peace within and of self-reflection, Mahavir Jayanti 2019 rituals at Goregaon’s Shri Parshwanath Digambar Jain derasar encourage the calm we all crave.

What is the significance of Mahavir Jayanti 2019?

Mahavir Jayanti commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavir. This year, it is on April 17. This year marks the 2,681 Janam Kalyan (birthday celebration) of Lord Mahavir.

The initiator of Jainism, Lord Mahavir (whose childhood name was Vardhaman) had adopted the path of non- violence. The title Mahavir was bestowed on him, as The One Who Has Overcome all His Desires.

Mahavir Jayanti 2019 at Goregaon

Shri Parshwanath Digambar Jain Mandir in Goregaon west celebrates its principal deity’s birthday in full pomp. Yet, this pomp is markedly simple – as per the norms of Digambar Jainism. No flowers bedeck the idols. Prasad or offering is just a handful of rice that each devotee offers to the Lord. A tranquil atmosphere is one to really celebrate and take back home.

The temple is almost half a century old – 47 years, to be precise. There are close to 300 people in the Samaj, living within a vicinity of 1.5 km.

The Mahavir Jayanti 2019 program begins at five am within the temple premises, with a Pooja Abhishek. In this ritual, the idol is bathed with sandalwood, milk, honey and water. This will be followed by a Rath Yatra reaching the grounds of I.B Patel School at seven.

After this, there will be recitations (pravachans) on the life of Lord Mahavir in the school grounds, by the current Guru Maharaj. Guru Shanti Sagar, who has observed over 10,000 fasts till date, will be present to spread Lord Mahavir’s message of non-violence and peace.

We suggest a visit to this derasar anytime during the day. Peace and stillness will be your greatest takeaways.
