#MumbaiRains: Join GHP in supporting the tribals of SGNP

Goregaon Highway Pulse has always kept its intent of being useful to society in sharp focus. The steadily growing GHP community on Facebook has come together time and again to support causes that need its strength.

Last year, we supported WWH (We Will Help Charitable Foundation) with the Aur Chalao campaign. Encouraging local residents to extend the use of their children’s old toys, books, clothes, etc., GHP amassed many assets that were distributed amongst two to three villages in Aarey.

This time round, GHP is supporting SEVA Charitable Trust in its work towards supporting the villages or padas inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). Many villagers, who form the original tribal population of the National Park, have been severely affected by the heavy Mumbai rains witnessed last week. Homes, roads, livelihood and daily survival have been challenged acutely as the local people have lost nearly all belongings to the floods.

Homes destroyed by the Mumbai rains at SGNP villages

Most severely affected by the Mumbai rains are Chunapada and Mali quarters. Entire walking paths and bridges have been flooded. People have lost entire homes and hearths. They now need the support of others to regain their stability and restore some normalcy to their lives.

Food supplies, refuge material like plastic sheets and tarpaulin, and medical goods are the need of their dire hours. SEVA, an NGO established by Oshiwara-based Amisha Parekh, is working tirelessly towards engaging those living beyond SGNP to step in and support those adversely affected by the Mumbai rains of last week.

GHP is trying to play a small part in having their constructive intents magnified to the community. While we have concluded one round of contribution, we would like to initiate more such.

Here’s how you can come forward and help us support SEVA Charitable Trust. Contributions can be in the form of –

  1. Dry Food supplies – Rice, dals, sugar, wheat, biscuits, tea, milk powder and any other form of supplies
  2. Dry Fruits – Dates, etc.
  3. Bedsheets, blankets, pillows, curtains.
  4. Large plastic sheets for roofing
  5. Clothes for men, women, children and infants
  6. Books and basic stationery for school children
  7. Medical and sanitary supplies – Mosquito repellents, sanitary napkins, antiseptics like Dettol.

Several people have offered monetary support but we are not accepting cash at this point.

Support in terms of logistics such as transport of goods to SGNP from Goregaon would provide a great boost to this cause.

We look forward to more support that exemplifies the symbiotic relation that we all must respect and live by.
